Know your character!

If you ask any top player about their character, they could tell you pretty much 99% of information about them including; frame data, anti-airs, backdash, which pokes the best for what situation etc. Knowing your character is extremely important if you want to become a top player.

Here's some Cody technology you may or may not know.

- Did you know that Codys focus attack has one of the best ranges in the game? Here's the proof?

Above are screenshots I took of the hitbox data videos. Using the "REACH" intervals you can determine which moves have more range. Some moves obviously have more range than others such as; Codys s.LP and Akumas c.HK, but for moves like Focus Attack determining the range compared to other characters can be tricky.

Using the data from the SSF4 Hitbox Data torrent, I was able to determine the range of Codys Focus Attack compared to other characters. The important interval is the end number, which is the maximum range of the move. As you can see from the pictures above Fei Longs max range is 1.877 and Codys max range is 1.931 which shows that Cody has more range.

I found that El Fuerte has the longest range Focus Attack and Cody came second.

What does this mean? Well this means a lot of things. Knowing this information, you can use Codys Focus Attack from the same range as Fei Long and other characters (except El Fuerte). Watch the range Mago uses Feis focus, Cody can do the same thing!

Note: Fei Long has the fastesst Focus Attack in the game so Fei Long can counterhit Ryu between a c.MK and a fireball blockstring whereas, Cody can't. Keep that in mind!

Another important thing to note is, Cody is +4 on a level 2 focus attack forward dash which means after a level to focus attack forward dash, you can do pretty much anything and the opponent will have to block, backdash, focus backdash or use an invincible reversal.

- Did you know that after a Zonk or EX Zonk, if you forward dash twice Cody is positioned for a perfect meaty cl.HP (If the opponent quick rises)?

I've seen pretty much all Cody players do nothing after landing a successful Zonk knuckle and by nothing I mean; unsafe jump ins, random dash ins, random rocks but by just dashing forward twice you position yourself for a meaty cl.HP which can lead into big damage.

- Did you know that Cody has an auto safe jump (Safe against 5 frame reversals) on certain characters after a HP Criminal Upper?

All you do is end a combo in HP Criminal Upper and hold up-forward. If the opponent quick rises then you'll safe jump them. This is useful in some matchups because it lets you keep constant pressure on the opponent.

The characters this works on are:

  • Adon
  • Akuma
  • Chun Li
  • C.Viper
  • DeeJay
  • E.Honda
  • Fei Long
  • Gen
  • Juri

Additionally, for characters that this doesn't work on automatically, you can just take a slight step forward after you land HP Criminal Upper and execute the same safe jump.

These are just some things that you may or may not know about Cody and there're more things to find out.

Knowing your character will improve your game and let you take Cody to the next level.

  1. Love your blog. I've always been a huge fan of Cody I tried to pick him up at the start of Super but went back to my old main (Boxer). I've been using Ken at UC but now I'm fully commited to Cody and without this blog I wouldn't of learned most of the things I know about him.

Thanks for all the hard work and help!

  2. Akumas DP is 3f, how does it work that your hp criminal setup can safe jump it?

  4. @#2, its not a real safe jump; it's more of a feint jump.

  6. There is also a good corner combo where if you end with a far cr.lk into lp.cu you can follow it up with a ex.Cu, a full combo does over 400 dmg if memory serves me right. Great write bro..
